Pownce has been running for a while with on-page ads and a premium service that removes them (and allows you to customize your profile fully). Twitter could go the same way, and I wouldn’t have any complaints.

Everyone knew ads had to be coming sooner or later. You can’t run a service for 100s of thousands of people without having some way to monetize it. If people can live with ads within search results, they can live with ads on a service they use regularly. And if Twitter offers a premium, no-ad service, then people have no excuse if they don’t want to see their Twitter experience littered with monetization.
