YouTube on the G1, T-Mobile’s Android phone
Online video site YouTube has been on the iPhone since the original version launched last year. It has pretty good usability, especially now that the device has 3G capabilities. NewTeeVee has just posted a video showing YouTube running on the G1, T-Mobile’s Android phone that people should start receiving later this week.
It looks pretty nice, certain things are better on the G1 version than they are on the iPhone’s (it’s easier to search and you can see comments), certain elements are worse (the video doesn’t take up the whole screen and the controls are pretty ugly). NewTeeVee puts the G1 and the iPhone side-by-side running the same video as well. Google, which made the Android platform, of course also owns YouTube.
Interestingly, it looks like the G1 isn’t using Adobe Flash to play the YouTube clips (which is the format YouTube uses for its clips on the web), and instead it appears to be using something similar to (or it may even be) the H.264 video codec that YouTube converts its videos to for the iPhone (since it doesn’t play Flash files). I’ve embedded the clip below.
