Apple sells over 1 million iPhone 3G S phones, offers $30 credit for delayed activations
Apple said today it sold over 1 million iPhone 3G S devices from Friday through Sunday. On top of that, it said that six million customers have now downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software since its release on Wednesday, June 17th.
Meanwhile, Apple said it would offer a $30 credit on iTunes for some consumers who suffered long delays in activating their new phones. Apple issued warnings to some users that activations could take as much as 48 hours.
The new iPhone 3G S went on sale on Friday. With a two-year contract, it costs $199 for a 16 gigabyte model and $299 for a 32-gigabyte model. The older iPhone 3G is available for $99 for an 8-gigabyte model.
The million-unit sales figure isn’t huge, but it certainly shows that Apple can still draw in the crowds for its newest iPhones. The good news can counterbalance the disturbing news that Apple chief executive Steve Jobs had a liver transplant. The Wall Street Journal reported the news on Friday night but Apple has not confirmed that yet.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said surveys showed that about 28 percent of the iPhone 3G S buyers were switching from another carrier, down from 38 percent a year ago. He said that it took Apple 74 days to sell its first million of the original iPhone in 2007 and three days to sell the first million of last year’s iPhone 3G.
