Michael Jackson’s memorial turning into a big Internet event
Michael Jackson’s memorial will take place starting at 10 am Pacific time on Tuesday. There’s a good chance a big part of the world population will tune into the event, and that could mean it’s going to be as huge a wake on the Internet as we’ve ever seen.
About 17,500 randomly selected fans will be able to watch the memorial live in the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. But that’s just a small slice of the 1.6 million fans who asked for tickets.
So now Digital events company Cinedigm Digital Cinema Corp. will broadcast the event live to as many as 17,000 people in 88 theaters around the country. The company will use the same video feed that television networks will use and will display the video in high definition. The idea is to allow people to mourn in a kind of shared experience, even though they aren’t at the Staples Center.
Tickets will be free and first-come, first-served. The list of theaters will be on the Cinedigm web site.
On top of that, a number of sites are going to broadcast live video of the memorial on the Internet, Facebook/CNN, MySpace, Hulu.com/Fox News, Justin.tv/E!online and Ustream/CBS News among them.
