“Skank” blogger speaks: “I thought my right to privacy was being protected”

portRosemary Port (pictured, right), a 29-year-old student at Manhattan’s Fashion Institute of Technology, was identified by Google last week as the author of the “Skanks in NYC” blog, on which she anonymously assailed model Liskula Cohen as a skank, a ho, and an old hag, and posted photos of Cohen (below) striking sexually suggestive poses. Cohen sued Google in January to identify the author of the blog, which ran on Google’s Blogger service. (The site has been taken down, so don’t bother looking.)

Port, who dodged reporters until now, gave the New York Daily News an interview that ran in today’s paper. Here’s the quotes-only version:

This has become a public spectacle and a circus that is not my doing … By going to the press, she defamed herself. Before her suit, there were probably two hits on my Web site: One from me looking at it, and one from her looking at it. That was before it became a spectacle. I feel my right to privacy has been violated … When I was being defended by attorneys for Google, I thought my right to privacy was being protected. But that fell right through the cracks. Without any warning, I was put on a silver platter for the press to attack me. I would think that a multi-billion dollar conglomerate would protect the rights of all its users … I feel proud to live in a country where you’re not persecuted for your opinions. Even though people are now taking pot shots at me on the Web, I believe those people have a right to their opinions — and their anonymity.

liskulacohen-300x225Port says she will sue Google. New York lawyer Salvatore Strazullo, whom the Daily News calls “high-powered,” is representing her.

The devil is in the details in this case. Attorney Aaron Morris, who specializes in Internet law and edits the Internet Defamation Blog, wrote about the case:

Look carefully at the comments. Defamation arises when someone falsely accuses someone else of, basically, illegal, immoral or unethical conduct. The comments don’t charge her merely with being a skank, but claim she is psychotic, a liar and a whore. The action would never have survived review if all that had been said is that she is a skank. That term is ill-defined and nebulous enough that arguably one could from the pictures form the opinion that word is an appropriate description. But what is the justification for the remainder of the remarks? What is the factual basis for calling her psychotic, or saying she is a lying whore? The comments go far beyond calling her a skank.

Call her thin-skinned if you want, but the case is about whether Google can be compelled to turn over the name of the blogger who made these unjustified remarks. Reports say Cohen buried her head in her hands and broke down in a Manhattan court this past Wednesday, crying as vulgar insults about her were read aloud from the Skanks in NYC web site.

Cohen, the model, seems to be an anger magnet. In 2007, she required 46 stitches to her face after a drunk bar patron hurled a water glass, a champagne flute and a mixed drink glass at her head.

Honey, thinking something doesn't make it so. How could you expect privacy on someone else's servers/sites? And how did you think you wouldn't be responsible for your statements?
  • meetzu
come on!!..they promised privacy..this means that nothing is safe now..even google did that...

Let me get this straight. Google (and its shareholders) should ignore the court orders and spend what will likely be millions of dollars to defend itself in the process, to allow this pathetic and immature student to call another person vulgar names in a childish and cowardly manner. Really??? Is that what this country has come to?
  • BigDhead
Yeah really??? what ever happened to freedom of speech??? Must be the ink fading ...

When did anonymity become on inalienable right?

The only people really winning in this case are the lawyers, the rest of them are just childish and really have nothing else to do. The comments made are very high school like and the resulting suit is just as ridiculous. Both of the parties need to find better things to do than entertaining others with their equally childish behaviors.

    Yo BigD Head:

    Freedom of Speech is OK

But all you whiners want "Freedom From Consequences" too?

    Can't have it both ways!

I hate to point something out to you, Rosemary. By publishing your blog, you put this out in public. Yeah, Liskula should have taken it on the chin. But she didn’t. Funny how these things happen. Granted, there are worse things you can do than call someone a skank, but the fact of the matter is honey, when you call someone a whore, you better be prepared to back it up, lest your weave winds up in someone else's hands.

    29 year old student.
OK when is she going to retire? At 35?

Hope this one will serve as a lesson and as a warning for those blogger like Rosemary. The law will always prevails!

She's pretty hot! And as some advice, use this to your credit when graduating from the fashion institute. The fashion industry is aggressive and fast paced, much like entertainment. Show you can be a pit bull in the media, and you can be a pit bull in buying meetings :)

I can think of only one solution any civil court should even consider (and
if it considers anything else or dismisses the case, there is no justice
in America): the pair of them must be ordered into a full on grudge match
in a jello-wrestling pit - when one is still able to stand when the other
one finally can't anymore, the standing winner gets to have sex with the
loser's 3 most desirable current sex partners... all at the same time... on
camera (on a proper 4-camera set, for crying out loud)... live on both the
internet and whatever cable/sat channels will carry the feed.

Not only would justice be served... so would the palpably (and
palpitatingly) pharisaical prurience of the Pilgrims' perfidious present-day
    progeny.
